Ultrasonic nebulizers are used for nebulizing inhalation solutions in the field of respiratory application. Aerosol generation occurs through mechanical vibrations at a frequency of 1.7 MHz, which are produced in distilled water (contact water). This is achieved by piezoceramic elements that convert electrical impulses into mechanical vibrations.
An aquapak® system within the contact fluid is used for the physical separation between the nebulizer and the nebulization unit. The generated vibrations are transmitted through the base of the system and then spread through the inhalation fluid.
Fine capillary waves form on the surface of the NaCl or inhalation solution, which increase with rising frequency and thus support the formation of a uniform aerosol.

Our ultrasonic nebulizers of the equosonic series produce droplet sizes of approx. 0.5 to 5 µm with a nebulization output of up to 6.5 ml/min. For average-sized horses, a nebulization output of about 4 ml/min is often used. The generated aerosol particles can distribute in different areas of the respiratory tract depending on particle size, breathing technique, and application situation.
Compared to technically simpler compressor nebulizers, ultrasonic nebulizers operate with high-frequency mechanical vibrations and produce a fine aerosol spectrum. The respiratory system has a large internal surface area, especially in the bronchial and alveolar regions of the lungs.
Over 95% of the surface of the respiratory system is located below the larynx. The bronchial system has very small diameter bronchi in its finest branches. In the literature, particle sizes under 5 µm are described in connection with applications in the deeper respiratory tract.
The ultrasonic nebulizers of the equosonic Private and equosonic Clinic series operate with a vibration frequency of the ceramic membrane of 1.7 MHz. This produces aerosol particles in a size range of approx. 0.5 to 5 µm.
For as even aerosol distribution as possible, a calm application situation with a low breathing rate is recommended. Therefore, the animal should not be intensely moved before the application. Also, strong physical exertion should be avoided immediately after the application.
The open mask
Our inhalation mask is made of high-quality, food-safe PE plastic in a bucket shape and does not require additional valves. Unlike closed mask systems, the generated mist is directed into the mask via a ventilation system, so the horse does not have to actively inhale the aerosol mist.
The open system allows for as calm and natural breathing as possible during the application. A relaxed breathing situation can help the aerosol particles distribute evenly in the airways. Due to the lower breathing speed during calm breathing, the fine aerosols can also reach deeper areas of the respiratory tract.
Our inhalers continuously introduce the generated mist into the mask while the horse can breathe in and out relaxedly.
Inhalation during movement
We recommend use while standing and in a calm environment. During movement, the breathing pattern often changes to faster and shallower breathing. This can alter the distribution of the aerosol in the airways.
For as even inhalation as possible, the horse should therefore stand still during the application. Movement after inhalation – for example, with some time delay – is generally possible.
